iPhone photos use a 4:3 aspect ratio by default, but several of the canvas sizes (8x10, 11x14, 16x20) are different aspect ratios — and 12x12 is square. Something always gets trimmed.
Prints.app uses WYSIWYG cropping for every canvas size: the visible region is highlighted and you can adjust the crop before you commit. The 12x12 square is especially useful when you want to keep the photo composition tight to the subject.
